I recently had the opportunity to visit Helsinki for the first time to teach at YogaHel, a newly opened studio with a name that might raise eyebrows—but don’t be fooled, it was anything but hellish. The space is fresh, modern, and full of great energy. The community there is still growing, but the students are passionate, committed, and truly lovely to work with. I taught daily Bikram classes, a few Intermediate sessions, and even a Vinyasa class. It was exactly what I love—traveling, teaching, connecting, and being immersed in a yoga bubble.

Visiting in June meant I got to experience the White Nights—something I’ll never forget. The light just doesn’t disappear. It’s surreal. Even late in the evening, it feels like mid-afternoon, and that brightness gives you this wild, extended energy. It makes it hard to sleep, sure, but it also keeps you curious and alive to everything around you.

Helsinki as a city is subtle. It’s not loud or overly vibrant, but there’s a quiet magic in the clean design, the open spaces, and the blend of modern and natural. The people are more introverted than I’m used to—less small talk, fewer hugs (especially in the yoga studio!)—but respectful, kind, and quietly welcoming once you tune into their rhythm.

One of the most magical aspects of the Finnish lifestyle is the sauna culture. I had the chance to visit Löyly, a beautiful seaside sauna right on the edge of the ocean. The views are breathtaking, and they offer different types of saunas—each with a unique atmosphere and intensity. I can’t recommend it enough; it’s deeply relaxing and very much a must-have experience while in Finland.

Outside of the studio, I also took a free city walking tour, which was a great way to explore Helsinki’s neighborhoods, learn about its culture and history, and meet fellow travelers. Later, I visited the summer festival at Seurasaari, which added a local flavor to the trip. Wandering the city on foot, taking in the architecture, the water views, and the calm energy of the streets—it gave me a fuller picture of Helsinki’s beauty.

When it comes to food, Helsinki delivered some surprises. Besides the unbeatable cinnamon rolls (seriously, life-changing), I also tried the traditional salmon soup, and it was absolutely delicious—comforting, flavorful, and perfect for the cool coastal weather. Highly recommend it if you’re visiting. And a quick heads-up: those charming waterfront cafes may come with seagulls on patrol—protect your pastries and ice cream!!

All in all, Helsinki was a beautiful and refreshing experience—teaching every day, sweating in saunas, walking through history, and enjoying every bite of local flavor. It’s not a city that shouts, but one that leaves a deep, quiet impression. Definitely worth a visit—especially in summer.
