In February, I took a short business trip to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia—a place I didn’t expect to explore much, but ended up discovering more than I imagined. The weather was pretty much what you’d expect for the season, mild and dry, but still perfect for wandering.

One of the highlights was my visit to the Turaif District, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that feels like stepping back in time. These ancient mudbrick ruins are full of history and atmosphere, and when I went, it was almost empty—just me and a couple of other curious travelers soaking in the quiet beauty of this old town.

I also stopped by Riyadh Season’s Boulevard World—a wildly different experience. Think Disneyland-meets-global-village, with replicas of cities from around the world, buzzing with activity and families. It’s super touristy, but undeniably fun to walk through.

The food? Absolutely delicious. Rich, flavorful, and hearty. The people were warm and welcoming, and despite the cultural contrasts—no music in public spaces, no alcohol, a more reserved atmosphere—I felt completely safe. It’s a unique place, full of contrasts: tradition and ambition, desert stillness and modern flair.

Unfortunately, I did not have the chance to do any yoga and I am not sure if they have hot bikram studios, but definitely on the list for the next visit.

Riyadh surprised me—and I’m glad I got a glimpse.
